The England women’s national football team, known as the Lionesses, is governed by the Football Association (FA) since 1993. They have a strong history, having played their first international match in 1972 against Scotland. England has qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup six times, reaching as high as runners-up in 2023. They won the UEFA Women’s Championship (Euro) in 2022 and 2025, marking significant achievements as the first England senior team to win major international trophies since 1966 for the men’s team.
